How to Lay A Cement Free Patio

Garden Oasis is lucky enough to have professional gardener Matt Jackson back on the team again this week, and this time he shows us how to install a cement (and hassle) free patio in your garden.

In his three-part guide, Matt demonstrates how easy it is to lay a secure and attractive patio all in a days work - and without having to get the builders in!

Part one of the guide focuses on the materials and tools, and how to prepare the area before laying your chosen slabs. Most of these tools you’ll have in your garden shed, but it’s always best to check before you start!

Tools:

  • Rake
  • Shovel
  • Drill
  • Mallet
  • Mattock
  • Spirit level
  • Spade
  • Saw
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Patio slabs

As well as tools, we offer a wide range of paving slabs and paving kits here, including the ones shown in the video.

Matt’s First Three Steps:

  • Excavation
  • Levelling and marking
  • Laying down the membrane

In this next instalment Matt focuses on laying down the material on top of the membrane. He gives different options for different sized patios and patios with varied types of traffic. Listen out for his helpful tips on how to make this process as easy as possible!

Matt’s Next Two Steps:

  • Fit retaining edge
  • Laying and securing the material

In his final instalment, Matt shows us how to lay the slabs securely, ensuring they will stay in place and give a neat, attractive finish. He shows us easy tips on how to check that your slabs are level across the entire patio and how to neatly fill the edges.

Matt’s Final Three Steps:

  • Laying sand
  • Laying the slabs
  • Filling the edges

And there you have it – a completed garden patio and not a builder in sight!
