Wooden Gates

Wooden gates are usually made from a softwood such as pine or redwood which need to be painted with a wood preservative to prevent the timber from rotting (some are made from hardwood which still require protecting). Our gates are made from the same type of timber but it has been pressure treated to prevent rot, which means our gates require no maintenance. The gates can be stained with a wood preserve or painted but this is just for cosmetic purposes, no additional protection is required.

From arch top to flat top and pedestrian wooden gates, we have a great selection to choose from. Making sure you have the correct width is important; remember to take into consideration the size of the gate posts you’re putting in place too. Once your garden gate has been delivered, how do you put it together and what bit is which?!

Most of the components to our wooden gates are put together during the manufacturing process. However, the below image shows you the main elements of a standard wooden gate that we provide so fixing and putting up the gate is made easier for you.

Fixing your wooden gate

1. Make sure your wooden gate posts and fixings are to hand, complete your measurements to be sure everything is going to fit well.
2. Measure the base of the posts and dig the foundation holes. Depending on the type of gate and ground condition, you will need to use concrete or readymade ballast. Our gates are designed to be concreted in place and require a foundation depth of 2 feet.
3. Place the post into the ground and fill with the ballast or concrete to just over ground level. Use a spirit or laser level to check that they are perfectly level and upright. Ram the concrete and using a trowel or other flat tool, round off the concrete to ensure no rain water drain away from the wooden gate posts.
4. Once in place and set, use the fixing kit to position your hinges on the posts. It is a good idea to fit the closing mechanism onto the posts/gates before putting them into position. This will make it far easier than trying to attach them in the upright position. Check using a ruler or tape measure that the hinges are at exactly matching heights on each post.
5. If fitting one of our large wooden gates for driveways, we recommend having two or more people help you position the gate and attach it. Place each gate in place, one at a time, supporting with materials to hold the gate in position while attaching the hinges.
