Rattan originates from tropical regions across Australasia, Africa and Asia. The name applied to over 600 species of palms. About 70% of rattan comes from Indonesia.

What’s more is the plants grow much quicker than other tropical plants and the process of harvesting is much simpler because of the simple tools needed and easy transportation.

The outer shell of rattan can be easily stripped off and used for weaving whereas the internal core, which is much harder, is used in wicker furniture.
Wicker is used throughout the world for many things. As you know it’s commonly used for rattan garden furniture, but it’s also used for martial arts canes and in 2010 in Italy, it’s even been combined with other materials and a heating process to create artificial bone!
