PLANTERS AND CONTAINERS -SUCCESSFUL PLANTING

For the front of your home, a planter filled with flowering plants provides a welcoming splash of colour, especially if your front garden extends to little more than a parking bay. A tarmac frontage may reduce work, but unless you add easy to maintain planters filled with your choice of blooms your frontage will look sterile and dull. Choose from a multitude of spring or summer bedding plants and bulbs, or your choice of shrubs such as hydrangea and pieris which will thrive for years in larger containers.

If you don't have a frontage, or live in a flat or apartment, then planters may be your only way of bringing the beauty of nature to your home. For back gardens, planters will enliven your patio area, allowing you to bring your flowering garden right up to your window if desired.

SECRETS OF SUCCESSFUL PLANTER GARDENING

The old rule is - choose a simple design and let your plants do the showing off - but when do rules matter? Your garden - your choice. We stock a wide range of wooden planters, but if you want a feature then look at our decorative planters - they look just as good when your plants have died down for the winter.

The rules to follow which must be adhered to:

  • Adequate drainage - your plants will rot in waterlogged pots. Broken clay pots or similar at the bottom will help water to drain away.
  • Compost - Use a good quality compost at the outset.
  • Water regularly when conditions are dry. But remember that even if we have had heavy rain, if your container is full of blooms or sheltered by the branches of a small tree you have planted in it, then rainwater may not have penetrated, so check your compost, and water if needed. (A good idea is to keep a filled watering can handy - it is quicker than reeling out the hose pipe, and you are more likely to water your pots when you are short of time this way)
  • Fertiliser- your plants will absorb the fertiliser in the original compost so do add more at intervals when you water to maintain the health and beauty of your plants. This is important both for plants which are going to grow for several seasons in the same container as it is for fast growing summer plants such as surfinas which put on amazing growth in the summer season.

Now look through our ranges of planters, raised beds, tree seats, herb wheels, trellis planters, decorative planters and much more. Your glorious bright oasis is just a click or phone call away. Do remember that, with the exception of a few postcodes, delivery is free from Garden Oasis, so you don't have to worry about how you are going to carry them home.
