The Iris belongs to a huge genus of plants, ranging from alpines barely 3 inches (7.5cm) tall up to specimens which can reach nearly 4 feet (120cm). Most though are 1.5 - 2 ft (45 - 60cm) tall, and it is this group that we mainly feature, as they are the most popular for garden borders. The colour range is extensive, but blues, lilacs, purples and yellows are most favoured, and the flowering season - depending on species chosen - can be anywhere between June and October.
Almost all though have the same petal formation with 3 inner petals (called 'standards') and 3 outer petals (called 'falls'). Generally speaking they do not like to be disturbed for several years so plant where you intend to keep them if possible.
Depending on the time of year, at Garden Oasis we stock either a small or large range or Irises. Dutch Irises are favoured by flower arrangers, and a bouquet of Irises is a pleasure to give or receive. You however will probably want them for the delightful (and often scented) display they give in your garden.
They thrive best in a sunny border, and prefer well drained soil.
