Who are the Electrical Safety Council?

The Electrical Safety Council (ESC) is an independent charity whose mission is to reduce deaths and injuries caused by electrical accidents.

The ESC works in partnership with local authorities, industry bodies and consumer groups to ensure that electrical safety is given appropriate priority and run campaigns to protect and educate consumers.

What is the issue?

Every year in the UK about 70 people die[i] and 1.2 million are injured in electrical accidents at home[ii].

Many people are unaware of the most severe consequences of electrical accidents, and of how easy it can be to protect themselves against them.

What is an RCD?

It’s a must-have safety device, which switches off the electricity in a fraction of a second if you get an electric shock. It provides much better protection than just having ordinary fuses and circuit breakers.

Why you should use one?

Whether you’re planning a few home improvements or working in the garden, first make sure you protect yourself with an RCD. It could make the difference between life and death.

Where can you get one?

You can buy a plug-in RCD at your local DIY store or garden centre. Or for total peace of mind, ask a registered electrician about having a modern consumer unit with RCDs installed in your home.
