There are several theories! The All England Croquet Club was formed in London in 1868. It is believed the modern game arrived from Ireland having been taken there from Brittany where a similar game was played on the beaches. It was first played under the name of paille-maille or pall mall which is derived from the Latin for ball and mallett. The Mall in St James Park, London is believed to have been named because the game was played there - King Charles II and his courtiers were fond of the game. It was even mentioned in Samuel Johnsons 1828 dictionary. Croquet was an event in the summer 1906 Olympics. The World Croquet Federation (WCF) is the International governing body and it is now played in 22 Countries over 5 Continents, and apart from the UK is very popular in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. Play it how you want to - as a very competitive game (unlike golf players can knock their opponents balls to give them a disadvantage, and it has been described as a mix of chess and snooker played on a bowling green). Or just play to enjoy it in your garden on a summers day. Anyone from young teenagers upwards can play for gentle relaxation and social interaction, as it requires skill rather than strength.
